Untold Reasons Why Philippine Companies Lag in DevOps & DevSecOps

February 29 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Armada Innovation Labs, in partnership with WiSAP, recently hosted the 2nd AWS Security User Group event at the AWS Office in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, Philippines, shedding light on the challenges hindering Philippine companies from embracing DevOps and DevSecOps practices.

The event kicked off with an introduction by Kate Villoria of AWS, the co-organizer, who provided insights into the flow and schedule of the event, setting the stage for a deep dive into crucial topics.

In the first part of the event, Dean Armada, founder of Armada Innovation Labs, led a technical discussion on the evolution from traditional data centers relying on Virtual Machines and legacy network models to advanced, efficient, and cost-effective technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Network Automation. Dean emphasized how security seamlessly integrates into modernized DevOps architectures, utilizing three-quarters of the whiteboard wall for his engaging presentation.

Elia Van Gica from Westcon Philippines continued the discussion by exploring Network and Application automation and demonstrated how to enable security using NGINX integrated with Kubernetes, building upon the concepts introduced by Dean.

Christian Armada concluded the technical discussion with a detailed overview of CI/CD Pipeline using CircleCI and showcased various security automation tools, presenting a holistic view of the DevSecOps lifecycle.

The event’s second part featured a technical forum with industry experts, including Arvin Lat (CTO at NuWorks Interactive), Paul Sears (Sr. Solutions Architect at AWS), Christian Armada (Sr. DevOps/DevSecOps Architect at AppEvolve), Kaye Alvarado (DevOps Engineer at Asurion), Benjo Aganon (Sales and Business Development at F5 Networks), Alvin Delagon (Sr. Solutions Architect Developer Specialist at AWS), and Kyle Atendido (DevOps Specialist at Armada Innovation Labs).

Dean Armada, the moderator, and Kate Villoria, the co-moderator, facilitated an engaging Q&A session with the panelists, delving into the reasons behind the Philippines’ lag in technological advancements like DevOps and DevSecOps. They explored key challenges and opportunities for driving innovation and adoption in the local tech landscape, sparking insightful discussions among attendees and experts alike.

This forum delved into the cultural challenges faced by Philippine management in adopting DevOps practices, highlighting a lack of familiarity with modern infrastructure and the benefits of comprehensive DevOps and DevSecOps implementations.

The discussion format featured an engaging 3-way dynamic, where not only the moderators and panel speakers actively participated but also included the audience, adding a fun and interactive element to the conversation. Dean Armada and Kate Villoria skillfully facilitated the dialogue, encouraging lively exchanges and diverse perspectives among attendees and experts on overcoming technology challenges in the Philippines

In the Philippines, many companies are hesitant to innovate and are slow to adopt frameworks common in other countries, resulting in limited use cases and models to follow. The event underscored the importance of raising awareness among both technical and management professionals to drive forward the adoption of DevOps and DevSecOps practices for enhanced efficiency, security, and innovation in the local industry.
